Those nutters have done it again.

Check out the 2manyDJs website for a collection of pretty much every good riff ever – one after another. Its exhausting but awesome!

There aren’t many people on the planet who haven’t heard “Pumped Up Kicks” and for good reason – It’s a boppy, happy shower-song that you can listen to over and over again. Listening to this album I was initially skeptical thinking either the whole album would be fluff tracks, or fillers with one or two hits. Thankfully “Torches” has no track that I would classify as a filler, and after listening to the  whole album five times in four days I can say that the accessibility of this album does not mean it lacks depth. It sucks you in on the first listen, and it gets better the more times you listen to it.

“Houdini” would be my favourite track from this album. It has the pop of “Pumped Up Kicks” but has more variation and pace changes. It layers and builds, getting increasingly frantic in its message to focus on your ability! It’s a song that resonates with you throughout the day. “Call It What You Want” is some kind of pre-emptive attack against pretentious reviews that could attack this album for being too pop.

“Helena Beat” is designed for the remix kids and sounds like its already been remixed. On its own its fun but overly bland almost inviting you to take it and play with it. “Miss You” is a song that you can listen to over and over again.

This entire album plays well from start to finish and you could put it on right now in a party only to have people respond “Hey I love this song” to multiple tracks from the album. This is pop done right, there are times I wanted more from the band but its like a can of coke you can’t be angry at it for being sweet.

8/10, This is a great album. I hope the next one has the layering, complexity and pop of “Houdini”.

Yeasayer, Odd Blood Album Cover

Yeasayer are an “experimental” band from Brooklyn, self-described as “Middle Eastern-psych-snap-gospel”. I tend to associate Brooklyn with gangsters and strong accents, so its refreshing to have something so unusual come out of there.

Yeasayer seem to slot perfectly into the Indie genre but seem different from everyone else if only for their versatility. There is a sense of madness mixed with good solid back-to-basics musicianship. A sense that psychedelic rock can be pop yet remain true to itself.

This is an album that is jumpy and twitchy, boppy yet relaxing. “Rome” wants to be a party in a box with driving rhythms, quirky solos and punchy runs. The lyrics are the grounding while this mad bouncy music happens all around you.

“Ambling Alp” is a song you can listen to over and over. I knew I needed to get more into this album because I kept finding myself going back to Hype Machine and re-playing this track – either early in the morning when I just got to work, or when I was relaxing with my SO, or when I was amping myself up to go out. It rambles, it shambles and it just wants to be listened to. Fun-folk psych-pop.

“O.N.E.” seems to be the track getting the most airtime from this album and it is probably the most fun light-hearted track off the album. Its accessible and its almost hard to accept its a break-up song (according to wikipedia it is about breaking cocaine addiction). You feel like grabbing a maraca and shaking along. Its a moving on song, that feeling you know you don’t need to see that person ever again.

“Madder Red” feels like it approaches the Arcade Fire in layers and epicness. I don’t want to move to this song, I close my eyes and picture all the instruments dancing around my headphones. I am frustrated by how much is happening but then it all stops and I feel teased. I have a feeling this will be my favourite track soon, but I’m not yet comfortable with the pace of change in this track.

Yeasayer feel like they have the potential to create a huge catalog of music to me. This album feels raw and honest, I have a feeling the next one will be more layered, more polished and more epic. This is a good listening here in the meantime.

Hype Machine is a service that scrapes music blogs picking up posted mp3s and collates them all in a way that allows you to vote on them and share them among your friends.

Mystery Jets album Twenty One is wholesome straight good pop/rock. “Two Doors Down” is as straightforward and catchy as it gets but the vocals stay with you long after the song finishes. “Flakes” is something else – I just kept playing this song long after the album finished craving to hear it one more time which is extremely unusual for me.

I can’t explain why this album resonates so much with me, but whatever it is this has it.

For a bit of music trivia, this album was produced by electro powerhouse Erol Alkan. I have no idea how he came to produce this album as it doesn’t seem to fit with anything else that he has done, but he is a man who always looks for polish and finish and I hope that is his influence over this album.

Delphic – I saw these guys at Oxford Art Factory recently and they were incredible. They seamlessly blend between trance music and rock music, mid-song, without the crowd so much as batting an eyelid. Having not heard much of them before I wasn’t sure what to expect, and I’m still not sure what I saw but I know the music was fantastic. Something for your chin-stroker who loves to jump around and cares not for genres.

As people turned away from TV and Radio, and moved to the Internet and IPods, I and many others wondered how we would find out about new music. Sure friends would notify us, and tools like Apple’s Genius helps a bit. Yet there is something disingenuous about this answer because these sources will only tell you what you already know, like deductive reasoning. The void is filled by podcasts, which give you direct access to basement producers and artists all over the world. These are my high rotation.

A State of Trance

Armin van Buuren’s ASOT was already firmly established as THE trance radio show showcasting the latest and greatest in trance tunes, but it has completely exploded in podcast form. These shows are short and sweet and great for exercise or studying. Armin talks little and is very humble when he does. This is energetic popular trance, with few vocals. Sometimes it goes darker or deeper but it stays very mainstream so you won’t ever be really challenged by this podcast, but you will never be disappointed either.

Trance Around the World

Trance Around the World has a silly name but and awesome reputation for delivering the best melodic, uplifting, hands in the fucking air trance. This is a meaty beast, 2 hours long with the first hour being devoted to new tracks and the second a guest set. This podcast is ultimate versatility as it can be your exercise backing track, for driving or for listening at home. Like ASOT, little talking is involved and just solid tracks. Mixing is simplistic but adequate.

Start with : Episode 300 – wow what a show that was. Just an outrageous collection of tunes.


I went looking for an electro-house podcast and stumbled across this gem. To be honest I don’t know whether this really is electro-house – its just a collection of bouncy pop-dance bite-sized tunes for the kids to munch on and its the new Ritalin. Not much can be said about this monstrosity – just try it and within a few seconds you will have a big grin or a be an instant hater.

Start with : start anywhere is all madness. Pick a podcast with a tune you recognize cause I love the way he throws pop remixes all over the place.

Hospital Records Podcast

London Elektricity hosts this weekly drum&bass show featuring all the best d&b tunes he can get his mits on. Tony supports smaller artists, promotes events and just loves the scene and those who are part of it. I’m sure he would be disgusted to be on the same page as trance podcasts and possibly for good reason because this is not just energetic beats and basslines – this is a celebration of d&b culture and support of those who really listen to their electronica. Unfortunately Tony talks over all the tracks due worries about bootlegs since they are often playing unreleased material – this can get very annoying.
